My poor poor blog must feel so neglected. :-( I'm sorry little blog. Things have just been crazy around here.
I have lost my digital camera. Actually... I think Zander is the actual culprit. So I can't post pictures of my finished socks, which have patiently been sitting on my coffee table for 3 days waiting for me to photograph them. They're quite great if I do say so myself. And they're super comfortable and they fit better than store bought so I don't feel like I"m pulling them up all the time. WOO HOO. So now I have cammy socks to do for Nick and Zander and red socks for my mom, and blue socks for me. Plus I'm still working on Clapotis, which I also wish I could take a picture of. I'm officially half way done. I also casted on for a modified booga bag last night. I got patons classic wool in white/cream and light blue/denim. It will be striped. I changed the needle size and thus I'm having to change cast on stitches, etc. But hopefully I'll be able to get past the boring garter stitch bottom in the next few days. It's a good project for me to have handy... I can just do garter stitch when the little guy is content for a few minutes. WOO HOO.
Well, I'm off... just wanted to let you know that I didn't completely disappear... hopefully I can find my camera today sometime so I can post pictures later! Have a good one!
Until next time,

The MeMe Challenge from KnitWhimsie
Are you up to the MeMe challenge? Here's a different take on the MeMe, whereby you put your answers in the comments section of my blog. When you are through, copy-paste the MeMe to your blog, and I'll stop by and do the MeMe for you! I will post the answers to everyone's three questions. . .
A. First, recommend to me:
1. A movie:
2. A book:
3. A musical artist, song, or album:
B. Ask me three questions, no more, no less. You may ask me anything you want, but I can decline to answer anything which makes me uncomfortable.
C. Copy and paste this in your blog.

Long Overdo Post
Hello Readers! Greetings on a yucky, rainy, dreary day in Connecticut. I know that I am LLOOOOOONNNNNGGGG overdo on this post. I promised I would post a picture of my finished sock days ago, and I didn't. Why? Because I've been busy. Knitting & dealing with a son that is having as many problems with daddy being gone as I am having. Luckily we only have a few more weeks. We will not be together for easter or for our 2 year anniversary. But if I can get through those I'll know I only have about a week after that! YAY!
Okay, so enough suspense. Here is my first finished (sucessful) sock.
Here it is on the table, and my second sock so far (where the stripes won't match up perfectly.) I'm getting ready to turn the heel.
No bad, eh? There are mistakes... 1 dropped stitch, several ladders, and a few little random holes, but guess what? I DON'T CARE! I made them myself and I love them! :-)
So, I started Clappy for the Knit Red KAL.
If you have some red yarn in your stash come on over and join us. You can knit anything your little heart desires as long as it's red... for Heart Disease awareness. There is no real start date... many have started, many haven't... but the end date isn't until the end of the year... so come over whenever!
Anyway, here's clappy so far...
Now, tell me... is that red or pink? It is Caron Simply soft in Rubine Red. Excpet when I got it it looked pink. Sometimes I see the red, but I mostly see pink. Sallee
, the list mom, okayed it anyway, but in order to do something truly red I will knit my mom some socks. This is it (and other socks that I got from Knitting-warehouse.
The cammy yarn is for a pair of work socks for Nick and with leftovers I will make Zander a little pair as well. The blue will be for a pair of crew cut socks for me and a pair for the little guy.
And finally... two last stock additions. I am in a yarn swapping group- Yarn Yoga
and we did a $10.00 yarn swap this month. I got 9 balls of sugar & cream yarn. I love to knit up quick wash rags in between projects so this will be great when I get in a knitting lull. I've knit 3 dishcloths so far this year. They only take about 2 hours. I think from now on I'll start saving them to throw in with Christmas gifts for family and friends. Nothing like a REALLY durable dish rag. :-) (I just realized how many names I used in the last few sentences for a wash cloth!...must be from my years of moving from the midwest, to the south, to the east... I say them all. LOL)
And finally... my aunt sent me some yarn from her stash...
I think this yarn will make a LOVELY shawl.
Very nice, huh? I'm so lucky. Okay... back to knitting!

100 Things about me
Not too much knitting progress to report.... but I do want to thank everyone for all the comments, knitting posts, and e-mails I got regarding my elf socks!!! Through all of them I determind that I did in fact start the toe decreasing on the wrong needle. So I started a new sock... because as one woman in an e-mail so elequently put it, "yarn is cheap, sanity is not." I don't have the patience to rip out the sock and try to re-do it. Besides, my attitude is rather good about it if I do say so myself and I have shown several people and we've gotten good laughs about it. Kelly
told me she could wear them as the arthritis in her foot has her toes slightly mis-shapen... I say GREAT! If I mess up this sock, the pair of them are going to make her silly toes VERY happy! I think I got your blog address right Kelly... if I didn't e-mail me and I'll change it. I was going from memory there! ;-)
Anyway, I also started the new toe decreasing tonight and think I may have also messed up in preparing for the kitcheners stitch. It says something about knitting until there were 10 stitches on each needle...(I don't have the pattern in front of me and I'm too lazy to go get it) and then beginning the kitcheners stitch. Well, I think I just transfered stitches from needle to needle until there were 10 stitches on each of 2 needles. I could have twisted something up in there. Sure does help if you actually READ the directions! LOL.
had 100 things about herself on her blog a few days ago, and I had such a good time reading about her so I thought you might like to see 100 things about me. For all my blogging buddies... if you haven't done this yet, you should... it's fun to look into yourself like this and I sure would like to read it!

WHAT DID I DO???
Okay... here's my sock this morning before I started the toe decreases. Beautiful huh???
Here's it after I finished.... notice anything??
No? How about now?
Yes, the toe faces the wrong way. So... to you experienced sock knitters... did I just mess up the grafting/kitchener stitch or did I mess up the toe decreases??
Here is a picture of it on... the white lines indicate which way the toe shape goes:
I know it's blurry... I'm sorry. That's the negative of getting a closeup with a flash only and no daylight... so bare with me.
Now... I started the toe decreasing on what I thought was the 1st needle. It was the needle where the first stitch would have been in the middle of the heel. Or is that the 2nd needle? Should I have started on the needle that ended with the middle of the heel??
GRRR. Anyway, I picked up another skein of this yarn (Lion Brand Magic Stripes... only $5.99 for those that like to really waste yarn and mess up their projects! LOL) since I know I will no longer have enough to do a pair of socks.
HELP ME! I'M DROWNING!!! Off to knit a cuff (cause I know I can do THAT right.)
Posted by Melanie at 9:34 PM
Or rather SOCK. Or maybe shortten it even more as I have half of one sock done... so I guess it's a SO ;-)
Here it is. Please excuse my ugly feet.
It's hard to take pictures of something with shape like that. I tried to just lay it on the table flat, but it looked like a blob of knitted yarn. So I put it on. There are some mistakes in it... but I'm not pointing them out and I'm not frogging it, because I AM doing it, and I LOVE IT! WOOO HOO!!!
Anyway, no time to chat, just wanted to share pics since I've gotten MANY requests. Back to knitting!

TOO MUCH STUFF
OH MY GOSH... way to much stuff to put in a title. First of all, yes you're at the right blog. Kitt
helped me fix mine! WOO HOO!!! And she's helping me figure out those neat little progress bars on the right too. And she made my buttons. Take one for your blog please! Aren't they great?!
I LOVE YOU KITT!!!
And amonge other news... I got a wonderful gift in the mail from Kim.
Check it out!
Isn't that roving BEAUTIFUL? I've been informed that it is merino... which is so funny & perfect because that's my favorite wool to work with. For some reason the colors remind me of childhood!! I just want to run my face up against it and walk down memory lane. I think it reminds me of my grandmother. I also got a pair of size 1 clover bamboo DPN. Those suckers are TINY! I think since the roving and the needles came together that they want to be wrist warmers or some other such thing that will be knit in the round. Any ideas?
And along DPN lines... check this out... I have FINALLY conquered my fear. Aren't you ladies proud?
okay, yes, I know there's not much there. That is 3 rows of 28 stitches. I'm doing a guage swatch and just learning how to do it. I can already tell that I'll have that ladder problem inbetween the needles. I heard to pull hard, but I did that. Not sure what the deal is. Maybe I'll just have to get used to it.
Also... Lion Brand Magic Stripes is the yarn you see here... great stuff... I really like it so far, EXCEPT the label on the skein says size 4 needles. You get on lionbrand.com and look up their sock pattern for use with this yarn and it says size 3 needles. HELLO. So that's one of the main reasons I'm doing a swatch... I got the "wrong" size needles. I've heard that most socks use size three so I'm sure I'll buy them eventually, but that drove me nuts!!
Onto other things that drove me nuts. My son. I got out of the shower today and walk in my living room to find this:
That is (was) 3 balls of sugar and cream yarn. They, before Zander got to them, had the wrapper still on them.
So I sit down and after a half an hour this is what I have done:
Notice that the green, yellow, white ball is gone. I got that seperated. Now I'm left with 2 balls of the exact same color. Talk about making my headache worse. It's still sitting on my floor. I'll have to clean it up before I go to bed... but what a headache! Oh, and it's verigated yarn so it's not like it's even easy to follow the tail through the pile of yarn. I should have gotten a picture of zander with it all wrapped around his legs. I didn't think about it. I was so mad my eyes were burning at that moment.
And one final thing... a woman on the Knit Red Knit Along group
told me about this neat, free way to make a center pull ball.
Take a toilet paper roll (empty) cut two notches in it and thread the tail in those notches. Start winding around the tube. Once you have a nice size ball started start making the wraps face diagonally as you see here:
Once you're done winding, simply slide the ball off the tube and you've got yourself a center pull ball. I didn't get that far tonight, but I'll show you pictures of what it's like when it's done.
Anyway, the yarn I'm wrapping is patons classic marino. (love that stuff!) and look at how the inside of the factory rolled ball looks:
That in itself looks like art to me! (easily amused I know.) Well, that's all the stuff I have to share with you tonight. I hope you have a great weekend and until next time, Knit some.

Cables & Clappy
Okay, so I joined the Knit Red Knit Along today. Check out the button on the right hand side if you want to join or learn more. It's a new knit along to raise awareness of Heart Disease. There is no restriction to what you can knit-- only that it's red. I've decided to knit my mom (whose favorite color is red) Clapotis
I think I will do it in Caron Simply soft. Although it's probably not the most luxurious yarn for something that is wrapped around your neck and draped over your shoulders it IS a soft inexpensive yarn. And since you need LOTS of this yarn to complete the project I think it will be the best bet.
Here is an update on Mark's Irish Hiking Scarf
Sorry about the washed out look, but I wanted to show a closeup of the cables.
This scarf is great and I think Mark will really enjoy it, but I'm looking forward to adding something else to the needles... as I feel like this could get pretty boring pretty quickly.
Of course I do have mariah (totally frustrated with it right now and I'm only 2" into the first sleeve) & my V-neck sweater (don't feel like ripping out my sleeve that is 2" too short!) that I could be working on. BLAH!
Here are my stitch markers. These little B***ARDS are a pain in the butt to photograph. I'll get a scan of them later... that will probably turn out better. But for now:
So, that's all for tonight... don't forget to check out the Knit Red Knitalong
Until next time, knit some!

What kind of knitter are you?
... check out this one. I know you love these silly things! ;-)
You appear to be a Knitting Guru. You love knitting
and do it all the time. While finishing a piece
is the plan, you still love the process, and
can't imagine a day going by without giving
some time to your yarn. Packing for vacation
involves leaving ample space for the stash and
supplies. It can be hard to tell where the yarn
ends and you begin.

I am feeling very content today (see right). Nick has left again, and although this saddens me I'll try to go with the flow and keep in mind that it's only for 1 month and that I'll be just fine without him. So I'm content with the feeling.
I'm content with my knitting. Check out my sister's boyfriend's scarf. (The boyfriend's name is Mark.) He might not like being referred to as "the boyfriend."
Thanks to Dan
for letting me bug him all day and for the help finding this oh so great pattern which is called the Irish Hiking Scarf and can be found here.
I also made 4 stitch markers today, but the fake light is just NOT working with my digital camera. I took a handful of pictures and all you can see is blobs. So I'll try to take pictures of those tomorrow while the little man is sleeping.
Speaking of.... here is the most recent picture of me and the little guy. He wasn't too into the picture because "The Wiggles" were on, and I'm looking a little like a deer in the headlights trying to hold him. My DH took several pictures, believe it or not this was the best. Silly hubby for thinking he needed a more recent picture to put in his rack in the sub. ;-)
Well, that's all for tonight, I'm off to work on Mark's Scarf.
Until next time,
Posted by Melanie at 9:27 PM
Well, I will say that the one good thing to come from Nick being in port and being so busy that I haven't been able to knit is that my house is CLEAN!
Well, not my kitchen, but that's because my washer and dryer reside there and I've got at least 5 loads of laundry to do.
BUT... my bedroom is SPOTLESS, Zander's room is SPOTLESS, my family room is spotless. All I need to do now is clean my craft area/dining room and my house will be perfect. AHHHH, it's so relaxing to be in a SPOTLESS house!!
Anyway, I've got about 1 hour until Zander wakes up from his nap so I'm off to knit. Not sure what I'm going to knit but I'll find something! :-)
Until next time,

My Week's Progress
So, this is what I've got done this week while I've been away dealing with cars, navy submarine "fun stuff," etc etc etc.
No, no, that's the right picture. I have my yarn, double pointed needles, a sock pattern (found here
) and double pointed needle/sock intructions (found here
No progress. Which is sooo soo soo depressing. And I know that I could probably start them tonight, but that will cause 1 of 2 things to happen, either I'll be so excited that I'm knitting and I'll stay up WAY TOO LATE and be DOG tired tomorrow OR... I'll just get frustrated with dpns and not want to pick them up. So I think I'll wait until Nick goes back out to sea to pick them up. It is certainly fun to dream though! :-)
Yeah, I know, this post lacks in substance... but you need to do something to have substance and I haven't had a chance to knit this week minus the 5 minutes I worked on a dishcloth last night. WOO HOO!
Anyway, until next time knit some (for me)!!!

No Knitting, No News
I know I haven't updated lately... and it will be a little crazy for a few more days yet until Nick leaves again.
Would you believe Nick just brought home his dirty laundry from the submarine yesterday (he pulled in port LAST tuesday!)? So now I've got loads and loads of laundry to do (aside from my other everyday stuff-- I don't wash uniforms with civilian street clothes... gross.) Then, our 2nd car (which is new to us in July) has died. I think there is something wrong in there that's draining the battery. I was standing outside with my neighbor the other day (shoveling no less) when the car just started running. I KID YOU NOT. The engine did not run, but the fans etc inside that thing did. So I got the keys and opened the door. Every light in the dash was on as well. So being the car dummy that I am, I yelled inside for hubby to come out and look at it. He got in the car, started it and then proceeded to "shut off" the car and pull the key right out of the ignition. The car kept running and the keys were in his hands!!! It was like some twilight zone moment. He fidled around a little more, trying to insert the key and turn it off. Finally he tapped the brakes and the car shut off. Gee, that's something I really feel safe driving around town.
So, luckily the car is under warranty. (glad I'm getting my $48.00 a month out of that!!!) I think there are some serious wiring issues with it. The brake light likes to come on (when the break isn't on of course). Both the side air bag and front air bag lights like to come on. And all these things have been tested and reset two times already. And then, my favorite thing of all... there's something seriously wrong with the transmission. You know... you run to the grochery or walmart, you get in your car, put your foot on the gas to reverse and your car just kinda drifts slowly and smoothly out of the parking spot. Not mine. I have to push the gas pedal down almost half way to get it to go and then immeadiately release from the gas a little bit to make sure that I don't go flying through the parking lot at 40MPH. Then, if I stop at a traffic light and proceed to go through it, my car will jerk at 32 mph. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Anyway, I'm getting really off topic. I'm just frustrated because it would be nice to relax and hang out while hubby is home. Not only that, but I'm stranded at the house during the day when he goes to work (because I'm certainly not getting zander up at 4am to drive his happy butt on base. NO SIREE)
So, no knitting news... just assurances that I am not purposefully slacking... just super super busy, and have to fear I WILL BE BACK.
Until then, knit some... for me too! ;-)
